For over a year, TRs from across the Bureau have been standing up and finally getting their voices heard. Interpreters have been presenting a united front on limiting their hybrid hours, TRs from Parliamentary Debates have unanimously signed a petition demanding hiring, and TRs from Linguistic Service have launched a petition with over 250 signatures calling for a better vision of translation.
We are in a much better bargaining position than we would have been if we had stayed on the sidelines for the past year. And we’re just getting started!
However, we now have the opportunity to put an additional ace up our sleeve by giving ourselves the necessary resources to bring leverage to the bargaining table and achieve our goals, such as guardrails around the deployment of AI and its effect on our professions, defending quality, occupational health and safety, and limiting the increase in our workload.
Our dues are currently flat and not indexed to inflation. They haven't changed since 2014, meaning that the value has been eaten away by over 30% cumulative inflation over these years. Unless we increase it, the current dues rate reduces our ability to win what we need.
