YOUR WORKPLACE ISSUES ARE GETTING ATTENTION

CAPE National has been working to build public awareness and support for protecting federal jobs and public services, defending telework, and advancing members’ priorities at the bargaining table — while showing Canadians how cuts, contractors, privatization, and costly return-to-office policies affect taxpayers and the services they rely on.

The good news is that it’s working. So far, over 200,000 members and Canadians have been reached!

To bring your message to more members and the public, CAPE National has been actively pitching stories to journalists, providing them with documents, data, and member experiences, and encouraging them to press the government for answers on the issues that matter to you, like RTO. We’ve also been expanding our social media presence across a range of platforms and working with prominent influencers.

The public support CAPE National is building now will be an advantage when bargaining starts this fall and continues into 2027.

Help spread the word and share the message on your social media now!

TELEWORK CAMPAIGN AND JULY 6TH RTO CAMPAIGN LAUNCH REPORTBACK
“Is Carney’s RTO plan a handout to commercial office real estate and big banks?”

Carney’s explanation for the RTO order has never added up — until now. Based on the evidence trail CAPE National is uncovering, we believe RTO is a handout to four record-profit Big Banks — CIBC, National Bank, BMO, and RBC — to help protect them from roughly $10 billion combined in bank office exposure tied to risky commercial office real estate bets.

This case is gaining traction, and mainstream sources are picking up CAPE’s evidence and amplifying it. Federal MPs, federal party leaders, media outlets and social media influencers are sharing CAPE’s evidence and asking their own questions about whether RTO is connected to the banks’ risky commercial real estate exposure. It takes time for a campaign like this to develop, but the word is spreading and momentum is building!

We want to express our thanks to all members who submitted messages about the impacts of RTO on your work and life for the government. We will deliver them directly to Minister Ali in our next meeting with him.

Following the July 6 action that focused on this campaign, CAPE heard questions from members about the tone, tactics, and “Big Banks” framing of our RTO push back. To be clear, CAPE is not endorsing or opposing any political party — we are challenging an employer policy that affects members’ working conditions and we are raising evidence-based questions about what is driving RTO.

Because the employer and the Carney government have not listened or reasonably consulted you and your EC/ESS colleagues, we are escalating our position through public pressure, direct advocacy, bargaining preparation, and following up on every piece of inside information we receive as we fight to reverse RTO.

BUILDING MOMENTUM ON WOMEN’S HEALTH
Bill S-243 and what comes next

In 2024, you and your colleagues put forward a resolution at the AGM for CAPE to initiate and support a comprehensive campaign on women’s health.

Building on our previous work to address this resolution, CAPE National undertook a comprehensive body of research on reproductive health in the workplace with a focus on menstruation, perimenopause, menopause, and fertility. The findings support that reproductive health should be enhanced in Canadian workplaces.

Using our research, CAPE National submitted a brief to the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology (SOCI) for their study of Bill S-243, An Act to establish a national framework for women’s health in Canada. The Bill has already received widespread support and is expected to be fast-tracked through the legislative process.

If passed, Bill S-243 would create a national framework to improve women’s health through better coordination, research, and access to care.

Bill S-243 presents a historic opportunity for Canadian labour organizations to advance women’s rights by coming together to advocate for greater reproductive health protections in the workplace.

Congratulations on advancing this priority. We will update you as the legislation moves through Parliament, and keep you informed of any other related progress on this important issue.

Resolutions may focus on CAPE’s policies and practices. As outlined in CAPE’s constitution, members may submit resolutions to be voted on by the membership following the annual general meeting.
