Reason for Donation:
The Government of Alberta is using the notwithstanding clause to mandate teachers back to work, while simultaneously stripping them of their ability to strike. Both individual teachers as well as The Alberta Teachers’ Association are facing the possibility of significant fines if they ignore this order, but by complying, they risk their ability to collective bargain in the future. A successful use of the notwithstanding clause in stripping workers of their right to strike could create a dangerous precedent against collective bargaining throughout Canada.
