Nathan Prier elected as new CAPE president

*ERRATUM: Please note that since its publication, CAPE amended the announcement pertaining to the election of two female VPs. Maria Mascaro was the first female VP elected at CAPE in 2008.

The Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) is pleased to announce Nathan Prier as its incoming president, following the close of the 14-day election period. Mr. Prier will begin his three-year mandate on January 1, 2024, on a full-time basis. Members were asked to vote for their preferred candidates to fill the open positions on the National Executive Committee (NEC) from November 30 to December 13.

Mr. Prier will be taking time away from his role as a senior economist at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada where he has worked since 2019, as well as being President of Local 508. He will bring his workplace, labour movement and social movement experience as a leader and organizer to the role of president, and vows to build up strong locals, institute major democratic overhauls and mobilize the membership.

This election took place during CAPE’s 20th anniversary year and, from a strong field of candidates, delivered a diverse board of directors, including the association’s youngest female vice-president  Annie Yeo for the EC, LoP  and OPBO groups, and the first francophone female vice-president Caroline Pageau for the TR group.

In addition, members also elected representatives to fill the positions of directors, as well as voted on a proposed resolution and financial matters. All voting results were certified by SimplyVoting and vetted by the Elections and Resolutions Committee and the candidates’ scrutineers, as per the CAPE Constitution and By-Laws.

The 2023 CAPE election stood out with a record number of candidates running for various positions and the most diverse pool of candidates representing a wide range of equity-deserving groups in CAPE’s election history.
