Budget 2025 passage will hurt Canadians’ access to government services

The Canadian Association of Professional Employees is decrying the passage of the government’s budget, which calls for cutting 40,000 public service jobs in three years without clarifying how they will do that.

“This budget does not have enough detail for Canadians to understand how it will impact them, all we know is that it will hurt,” said CAPE President Nathan Prier. “Cutting 40,000 jobs means they will have to cut programs and services that people rely on – or spend substantially more taxpayer dollars on outside consultants. Either way, it’s Canadians who will now pay the price.”

Beyond job cuts, the budget includes proposals that will have a major impact on workers’ rights, including a mass deployment of artificial intelligence and changes to the Federal Public Sector Labour Relations Act.

After the budget was announced CAPE and other federal public sector unions joined together to call on all parties to propose real solutions to retain the workforce and attract the best and brightest to the federal public service.

CAPE will continue to fight against cuts that hurt Canadians and push for straightforward cost-saving measures, including decreasing the reliance on outside contractors, granting widespread remote work rights, and reducing the government’s massive real estate portfolio.
