Are you looking to be more involved in our union? If so, then join the Indigenous Circle at CAPE!
The Indigenous Circle is a new (May 2025) equity caucus by and for members of the CAPE. We welcome Indigenous members and allies to join. We are committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive and supportive environment for First Nations, Inuit and Métis employees within the federal public service, one that promotes both personal and professional growth, addresses systemic barriers, and holds the employer accountable to its reconciliation commitments across all levels of leadership.
Despite increasing representation of Indigenous employees in the federal public service, there remain systemic challenges, including lateral violence, discrimination, and inequitable career advancement opportunities. The CAPE Indigenous Circle seeks to use the union’s platform to advocate for policies and practices that promote inclusivity, cultural understanding, and equitable treatment. This includes professional networking, retention strategies, advisory functions to senior management, and support for cultural and interdepartmental initiatives.
The Circle aims to:
- Build a welcoming and collaborative community for Indigenous employees.
- Address and mitigate workplace discrimination and lateral violence.
- Offer tailored support for career growth and retention of Indigenous employees at all levels.
- Promote cross-cultural awareness through education and dialogue.
- Bridge Indigenous identities with the professional roles of public servants.
- Advocate for change and the recognition of Indigenous rights, while also seeking employer support for these rights and the unique circumstances of Indigenous employees.
We also want to invite you to a two-day strategic planning event in mid-September, date to be determined. We are looking for 15 to 20 members to help us build a strong foundation for the caucus and to identify priorities for the next year.
Please see our sign-up sheet to join the caucus which also has a spot to indicate if you want to join our September event:
