Menstruation, Fertility and Menopause

Santé des femmes et ménopause

Note: We have changed our terminology in our survey and on our website to be as inclusive as possible and to be more respectful toward the transgender community. We thank our members for their constructive feedback, and we will continue to work to improve our language and foster inclusion within the union. Our commitment is to advance rights and create better working environments for all union members.

Menstruation and menopause are natural aspects of life that many workers experience while actively contributing to the workforce. By fostering awareness and creating a supportive work environment, organizations can help ensure that everyone can continue to thrive in their careers as they navigate health experiences with confidence, dignity, and the necessary support.

Reproductive health issues, including menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, have traditionally received limited public discussion. Increasing awareness and understanding can help foster a more inclusive environment where affected workers feel supported in managing their health with confidence.

With more than 60 percent of CAPE members identifying as women, and who may experience reproductive health changes throughout their lives, including menopause, we are committed to advocating for their well-being. Among other important workplace measures, open conversations, workplace flexibility, and access to resources can play a key role in promoting their health and professional growth.

A 2022 report by Menopause Canada notes that there are more than five million working women over the age of 40 in Canada, meaning that more than 25 percent of the country’s labour force is entering or experiencing menopause. While menstruation and pregnancy have traditionally received more attention, it is essential to consider the full reproductive cycle when addressing reproductive health in the workplace. Perimenopause and menopause, in particular, deserve greater recognition from researchers, workers, and employers to ensure comprehensive support for women at every stage of their careers.

Thanks to a successful members’ resolution passed in December 2024, CAPE launched a concerted campaign to improve awareness of menopause and reproductive health experiences and ensure adequate and equitable support in the workplace. These changes will enhance workers’ talents and contributions, regardless of gender, age or life stage.
