Protecting the French language in the federal public sector

As one of Canada's official languages, and the official language spoken by 22.8% of the population, French language is an essential part of Canada's identity. Yet, despite its important status and legal protections found in the Official Languages Act, numbers suggest that French is in decline.  Closer to our members, this translates into more challenges for 26.1% of federal public sector employees who coincidentally continue to report challenges when it comes to using their mother tongue in the federal workplace.

We know how important it is to stand behind our French speaking members and continue to advocate for measures to ensure they can express themselves in French and not find themselves at a disadvantage. Find out more about our efforts here.

On International Day of La Francophonie, we want to acknowledge the rich contribution of the French language and culture to our national identity, pay tribute to all French speaking communities across Canada, and reiterate our support for the promotion and the protection of this foundational language in society and especially in the federal workplace.
