CAPE is seeking an experienced freelance translator to provide translation, revision, and linguistic support for a wide range of organizational communications. The successful service provider will primarily translate from English to French, with occasional French-to-English assignments.
The work may include administrative, technical, financial, campaign, marketing, member-facing, and public-facing materials in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and other formats. The assignment will include both planned work and urgent requests. A key function of the contract will be helping CAPE respond to same-day and short-turnaround translation needs while maintaining a high standard of accuracy, consistency, tone, and linguistic quality.
This is a service contract with an independent contractor. No employment relationship will be established between CAPE and the selected service provider. The contract does not include any promise or guarantee of future employment. Any future employment opportunity would be handled through a separate recruitment process.
Compensation and contract term
- Rate: $0.35-$.40/word on the market. The final rate within the stated range will be determined based on the successful service provider's experience and qualifications.
- Expected service capacity: up to approximately 30 hours per week.
- Contract duration: Until mid-December
- Anticipated start date: Last week of July – first week of August. The final contract dates will be confirmed in the service agreement.
Scope of work
- Translate and revise a wide variety of documents, primarily from English to French and occasionally from French to English. Ensure that translations and revisions accurately reflect the meaning, context, tone, audience, and intent of the source material.
- Produce high-quality translations of complex, sensitive, or high-visibility materials, and apply CAPE's terminology, style preferences, and inclusive-writing guidelines consistently.
- Collaborate with CAPE's Linguistic Services and Communications teams to clarify source content, terminology, priorities, and deadlines.
- Support urgent, same-day, and short-turnaround requests as an important part of the overall assignment.
Requirements and expected deliverables
- Significant professional translation and revision experience, preferably involving unions, government, associations, non-profit organizations, advocacy organizations, or other public-interest environments.
- Excellent written comprehension in English and excellent written French.
- Strong revision, copyediting, terminology research, and quality-control skills.
- Ability to manage a variable weekly workload and multiple assignments with changing deadlines.
- Ability to handle urgent requests that may require same-day delivery.
- Expected production capacity of approximately 1,300 translated words per day, depending on the complexity, format, revision requirements, and urgency of the material.
- A proactive and collaborative approach to questions, terminology issues, and unclear source material.
Availability and service expectations
- Be available to receive and respond to assignment requests Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET for the duration of the contract.
- Be able to accommodate urgent or last-minute requests within that service window.
- Be available for occasional weekend availability for urgent needs connected to specific campaigns, events, bargaining developments, announcements, or other organizational activities. If urgent turnarounds may be required within a certain project or push, CAPE will provide advance notice.
- Communicate primarily through email and Microsoft Teams, and participate in brief check-ins or planning conversations when needed.
Assessment and confidentiality
- Candidates will be required to complete a translation skills assessment.
- Because many CAPE communications involve confidential or sensitive information, the selected service provider must sign a non-disclosure agreement before beginning the assignment.
The selected service provider will remain responsible for:
- Organizing their own work and service-delivery methods.
- Tracking time and completed deliverables accurately for invoicing and project-management purposes.
- Providing invoices in accordance with the service agreement.
- Maintaining any equipment, software, licences, insurance, registrations, or professional requirements needed to provide the services.
- Meeting their own applicable tax, insurance, and professional obligations.
