On March 9, representatives from the Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE) met virtually with Yves Perron, Bloc Québécois Whip and member of the Board of Internal Economy, to discuss ongoing health and safety concerns affecting parliamentary interpreters.
CAPE provided MP Perron with an update on a recent workplace incident involving an interpretation assignment and outlined the status of the interpreter’s file.
CAPE highlighted that the situation reflects broader challenges facing the interpretation service, including funding pressures, deteriorating working conditions and increasing reliance on non-accredited interpreters. These issues are contributing to concerns about interpreter health and safety and the long-term quality of interpretation services supporting Canada’s official languages.
CAPE and MP Perron agreed to remain in contact as the issue evolves.
