As public servants confront growing economic uncertainty and the prospects of a new government, there are concerns that workers could face significant layoffs in the near future. Cuts and hiring freezes have already begun in some departments with very weak mandates to carry them out, little indication of whether they will be extended, and no certainty about the next government and its plans.
To ensure that workers are aware of their rights and that CAPE and other unions are ready to fight back against potential layoffs, the CAPE Education Committee will be hosting two events: one on the technical elements of how workforce adjustment (WFA) works; and the other on how we can resist government cuts and layoffs while defending ourselves in the workplace.
CAPE recently published a guide on WFA to help members and local leaders understand how WFA works and to share lessons learned from the most recent period of WFA, called the deficit reduction action plan—or DRAP—which began in 2011 under the last Conservative government. The guide also includes updates on recent legislative and collective agreement changes, and commentary on how to deal with a WFA situation if you or your colleagues are affected.
CAPE labour relations officers François Paradis and Diana Ash will walk members through the guide and respond to questions from members.

These events are part of a broader political education series hosted by the CAPE Education Committee on the shifting economic and political context and how we can prepare to defend ourselves.
