In recent months, politicians and media have warned us of a looming economic crisis. Soon, we will be reminded that it is time to tighten our belts and trim the fat as governments in Canada switch to austerity mode, shedding jobs and potentially cutting critical public services. What will likely be missed is that, in every period of crisis, there are winners and losers, and those who shoulder the burden of austerity are typically those with the least power to fight back.
The CAPE Education Sub-Committee and the Leo Panitch School for Socialist Education will be hosting an educational series on the ABCs of austerity. Join us as we explore the politics of austerity, the common interests that unite public servants and the public more broadly, the nature of the state as an employer, and the lessons learned from previous fightbacks against public sector cuts.
We will start the series with two initial online presentations and discussions on July 9 and 10, from 5:30-7:00 pm.
