Position summary  

The accessibility and administrative coordinator is a combined role, encompassing the responsibilities of both accessibility coordinator and administrative assistant to the president. The coordinator, in their accessibility functions, will evaluate the CAPE’s accessibility and inclusiveness not only to comply with regulations but also to contribute to a more inclusive working environment. The incumbent will oversee the development of universally accessible documents, forms, and policies, as well as templates for broader use by the association. The incumbent will coordinate and contribute to the design of accessible CAPE products and services. With the combined knowledge, technical expertise, and interpersonal skills, the accessibility and administrative coordinator will recommend policy and procedure changes in consultation with stakeholders. Lastly, approaching situations with empathy, sensitivity, and a commitment to finding reasonable solutions that balance the needs of the requestor and the organization is expected by the incumbent.  

In their administrative functions, the coordinator will work alongside the executive assistant to the president to provide dedicated administrative support to meet the ongoing needs of the president’s office.  
 

Key responsibilities  

  • 60% (accessibility work) / 40% (admin committee work) split.  
  • Develops template documents that are universally accessible.  
  • Ensures that documentation is made accessible to support the work of the president, national executive committee, management team, committees and other parts of the associations as needed.  
  • Maintains documentation related to accessibility standards, policies, and procedures.  
  • Track and report on progress toward accessibility goals.  
  • Recommends accessibility policies and procedures to ensure ongoing compliance with accessibility standards and the organization's accessibility principles.  
  • Acts as the accessibility point person during official CAPE functions.  
  • Working alongside the executive assistant to the president, provides administrative services to meet the needs of the president’s office, including event registration, preparing and distribution of materials, recording of minutes, managing correspondence, storage and management of files.  
  • Prepares, or finalizes, and distributes hard copy and electronic messages, notices, training materials, and other documents to audiences (e.g. media, other labour unions, employer departments and agencies, members, etc.).  
  • May perform other duties as assigned.  
     

Communication  

  • Communication skills including speaking, writing, listening, and presentation skills are required to develop and advance arguments to convey to members and staff information and advice pertaining to accessibility, to explain procedures and options, and CAPE’s position on accessibility.  
  • Communications skills are also required to convey reports or recommendations and the provision of sensitive information to management or the president’s office.    
     

People management   

The work requires the incumbent to be responsible for their own work, and to serve as a member of project teams for the development and delivery of accessibility-related projects.    
 

Minimal qualifications/job requirements  

Education and experience  

  • College diploma or undergraduate degree in human resources or a closely related field.  
  • Two to four years of experience in related work.    
  • Note: Equivalent combinations of education and/or experience are considered.  
     

Languages  

  •  Fluency in both official languages is required.  
     

Other skills and abilities   

  • Knowledge of the vision, mandate, objectives, and culture of CAPE.  
  • Knowledge of CAPE’s Constitution and By-laws.  
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite of programs.  
  • Knowledge of project management theories, practices, and techniques.  
  • Knowledge of the theories, evolving principles and practices of accessibility, and federal, provincial, and private sector accessibility policies, standards, and practices.  
  • Knowledge of training methods and practices to assist in the creation of training material and to provide training.  
  • Knowledge of methods to carry out research and sources of accessibility information including research databases.  
  • Practical knowledge of web accessibility, assistive technologies, or accessible design.  
  • Practical knowledge of designing inclusive products, services, and environments.
