20 years of advocating for our members”

The AGM was held under the theme “20 Years of Advocating for our Members”. We chose this theme because 2023 marked 20 years since the Social Science Employees Association and the Canadian Union of Professional and Technical Employees joined forces to create the Canadian Association of Professional Employees (CAPE). At this year's AGM, we reviewed our achievements for 2023 while celebrating our 20th anniversary and CAPE's history, growth and successes over the past 20 years.

Two special guests addressed CAPE members at this year's AGM. First, Bill Krause, CAPE's first President. Mr. Krause who was one of the driving forces behind the formation and founding of the Association, which was born in 2003 from the merger of the Social Science Employees Association, formerly the Economists, Sociologists and Statisticians Association, and the Canadian Union of Professional and Technical Employees. He shared with us his memories and anecdotes on this defining period in CAPE's history.

Followed by Kwame Osei, professional facilitator and keynote speaker for seminars and various types of events aimed at inspiring change, action and growth. He shared his views on diversity and inclusion in communities, schools and workplaces, while engaging in interactive exercises with members of the audience.

In the second half of the evening, our Finance Director Sharon Slater and auditor, Nadia Daskalova from McCay Duff presented the audited financial statements and answered members' questions.

We then moved on to CAPE’s President, Scott Crawford who presented a summary of the year's accomplishments and challenges covering a range of topics that included collective bargaining, pay equity, telework, government relations, labour relations, training, and research. He also updated the membership on the operational and financial aspects of the organization. More details will be provided in the 2023 Annual Report scheduled to be published soon.

We ended the evening with CAPE's Elections and Resolutions Committee (ERC). The ERC gave us more information about the vote before giving the floor to the five candidates for the position of president of the association, who had the opportunity to address the members for the last time before the vote.
