Use of Personal Credit Cards for Government Travel

February 23, 2007 CAPE has been asked by members to clarify whether obtaining and using a Government of Canada American Express Credit Card (a.k.a. the Government Travel Card) is obligatory when on government travel. Employees are not obligated to use this card, unless they are in an excluded position. Pursuant to Sections 1.6 and 1.7 of the Government Travel Directive, the use of the Government Travel Card is voluntary. Employees (other than excluded employees) are free to utilize their personal credit cards to cover travel costs associated with government related travel.
