News Bulletin From CAPE President José Aggrey
September 26, 2006
It has been made public that the federal government intends to save 2 Billion dollars by way of cuts and savings, from inside the federal public service. This announcement comes as a result of a follow-up on the Conservatives 2006 budget. My understanding of the initiative is as follows:
The savings will essentially come from four different sources:
The government will cut programs that are no longer relevant, and non-core programs - for example, the National Defence High-Frequency Surface Wave Radar Project, and the Consolidation of foreign missions.
The government will convert unused, budgeted funds into savings – for example the elimination of the RCMP drug impaired driving program’s training budget.
The government will take into account efficiency savings – for example Operation efficiencies at the Canada Firearms Center.
More exact details will be made public in the near future.
I have been advised that no more than 300 to 350 positions across the board will actually be affected by this government initiative, and Treasury Board President Mr. Baird has publicly stated that no public servants will be put out of work.
