Budget 2019: First Impressions

March 21, 2019

On Tuesday, the federal government unveiled its proposed budget for 2019-20 and our initial reaction is disappointment over what seems to be a weak response to the Phoenix pay system fiasco. Although, we welcome a proposed investment of $523.3 million “to ensure that adequate resources are dedicated to addressing payroll errors”, the budget does not acknowledge the substantial damages done to our members and public servants in general.

Let’s take this opportunity to remind everybody of the significant financial and mental hardships experienced by thousands of public servants. The federal government’s response should have been more wholistic and include proper compensation measures as well as details on transitions.

CAPE will provide a more detailed analysis of the budget and how it impacts our members in the near future but suffice to say that the budget fell short of our expectations.
