The Rant (don’t say I didn’t warn you!)
My dear friends, since a great deal of water continues to flow under our union bridges (burning bridges, bridges that are being built, and other metaphoric bridges too numerous for me to mention here), I have put together this report (not to be rolled up and used as fuel, I might add) to help brighten up your evenings as you relax by the fire. Yes, dear spectators of matters unionist, I admit it's been a long time since I've written you and I know that my epistolary hiatus is a cruel thing to do to you. It's just that I was suffering from an acute crisis that in Latin is called tempus fugit, which, combined with a new whim of mine to live by the tenets of socialism (the "Marc" - and not "Marx" - version of this doctrine which holds that that being a socialist means leading an extremely active social life), have stripped me of all my free time. Since the mid 1990s the Translation Bureau and the union have been working towards addressing concerns regarding English translation – the English central sections having been dissolved in 1994. After many years of attempting to address the issues, the union has been advised by Bureau management that it sees no need to address any particular problems. In accordance with the Translation Bureau Local By-laws, an election is being held to fill the following five (5) positions on the Executive: Officer representing Multilingual Translators in Operations Officer representing Parliamentary Translators (Committees, Debates and Parliamentary Documents); Officer representing TRs from outside the National Capital Region; Officer representing Terminologists; Officer representing Francophone Translators in Operations (position currently vacant).
