TR Collective Bargaining Negotiations – An Update

May 18, 2006

The negotiating teams for CAPE and the employer met at the beginning of May, following a lengthy hiatus as a result of the dissolution of Parliament in November. The teams discussed issues that had not yet been addressed at the table. Progress has been made and it appears that negotiations are coming to an end.

Since the first meetings in June 2005, the teams have been in agreement regarding improvements to the collective agreement which governs the TR group. These improvements were accepted by the employer, without our having to make major concessions. As well, several problems outside of the collective agreement were addressed, by way of administrative actions agreed upon by both parties.

The next meetings are scheduled for the 23, 24 and 25 of May. It is possible that negotiations will be concluded by the end of the week. If all goes well, CAPE and Treasury Board will have an agreement. If there is no agreement, then the Negotiating Committee will have to decide whether to continue discussions with the employer, or to refer the matter to arbitration.
