The Translation Bureau: The Move and The Rumours

July 19, 2005

CAPE President José Aggrey, Translation Bureau Local President Luc Gervais and Claude Danik, CAPE Director of Professional Services, met with the Special Assistant of Scott Brison, who is the Minister of Public Works and Government Services, and responsible for the Translation Bureau.

It was explained to us that the media reports regarding a possible move of the Translation Bureau arose as a result of political lobbying by Liberal Members of Parliament from New Brunswick Ministers.

We were reassured that no plan for moving the Translation Bureau exists, and that the only significant items on the table at Public Works and Government Services at this time include an expenditure review – the same expenditure review which began when Prime Minister Martin took office.

Luc Gervais then met with the President of the Translation Bureau, Madame Kennedy, who provided the same take on the rumours.

In addition, José Aggrey has written to Mr. Brison, asking him to confirm in writing that there are no plans to move the Translation Bureau to New Brunswick.

We are also planning to meet with various Members of Parliament in order to ensure that any internal lobbying regarding any rumoured move, leans towards the National Capital Region.

To date, all our information, both formal and informal, indicates that the move is nothing but a rumour. Nevertheless, CAPE will take whatever steps are necessary in order to ensure that any political conditions that would point to a move, do not materialize.
