Training Opportunities at CAPE for Association Representatives

March 31, 2006

The following is the Spring training schedule for CAPE, as well as the course outlines. All training will be conducted at the national office, starting each day at 8:30am.

Course Descriptions

Stewards’ Training: The Stewards’ Training Course


1. The Stewards’ Training Course will be given over a period of two days.

2. Only members who are Association Representatives (Stewards and Local Leaders) or who have made a commitment to becoming an Association Representative (Steward or Local Leader) can take the course.

3. Only Association Representatives who have not taken the course in the past five (5) years are eligible to take the course.
4. At least five (5) members must be registered for this course to be held.

5. This training course is usually given twice a year, normally in May and in November; separate sessions will be provided in French and English.

Stewards’ Training: Know Your Collective Agreement Course (EC or TR)

1. The Know Your Collective Agreement Course is a one-day course that is given to familiarize Association Representatives with the collective agreement that applies to their members.

2. Only members who are Association Representatives (Stewards and Local Leaders) or who have made a commitment to becoming an Association Representative (Steward or Local Leader) can take the course.

3. Only Association Representatives who have not taken the course in the past five (5) years are eligible to take the course.

4. At least five (5) members must be registered for this course to be held.

5. This training course is usually given once a year, normally in May; separate sessions will be provided in French and English.

OHS Representatives’ Training: Occupational Health & Safety Course

1. The Occupational Health & Safety Course is a one-day course that is given to familiarize Association OHS Representatives with their roles, rights and responsibilities as occupational health and safety representatives.

2. Only members who are Association OSH Representatives or who have made a commitment to becoming an Association OSH representative can take the course.

3. Only Association OSH Representatives who have not taken the course in the past five (5) years are eligible to take the course.

4. At least five (5) members must be registered for this course to be held.

5. This training course is usually given once a year, normally in May; separate sessions will be provided in French and English.

Collective Bargaining Committee Training Course

1. Collective bargaining requires knowledge of the juridical and strategic issues that set the framework for negotiations.

2. At some time during the three-month period which precedes notice to bargain for a group represented by CAPE, the Association will offer members of the bargaining committee a half-day course on the legal framework and the strategic issues of bargaining.
